Caribbeans chase 119

Bangladesh put up 118 for 7 on board after electing to bat first in a rain-reduced 25-overs-a-side contest against West Indies yesterday.

Skipper Habibur Bashar led the way with a whirlwind 42 off just 45 deliveries after both openers went out cheaply, leaving the team at 18 for 2. Bashar fashioned a crucial fourth wicket partnership of 47 with vice-captain Rajin Saleh (17).

But after he was caught by Chanderpaul off Dwayne Smith in the 20th over, the Tigers lost their way. Foysal Hossain also chipped in with 17.

Smith was the most successful West Indian bowler with three for 24 runs in his four overs.

The Tigers have already lost the three-match series but can take some consolation from Wednesday's final game before the two Test series begins.

West Indies are still captained by Ramnaresh Sarwan while Brian Lara recovers from a hand injury.

Bangladesh have made one change in the side that played the last ODI in St Vincent. Left-handed batsman Faisal Hossain, a prolific run-getter in domestic cricket, makes his debut at the age of 26. Alok Kapali has been left out after a prolonged run of failures with the bat.

Meanwhile, three players joined the Tigers on Tuesday for the Test matches. They are opening batsman Javed Omar, paceman Alamgir Kabir and left-arm spinner Enamul Haque.

The cricketers likely to head back home after the ODI series are Khaled Mahmud, Abdur Razzaq and Shahriar Hossain who had X-rays done here in the absence of MRI facilities. According to Tigers physio John Gloster, Shahriar needs to rest and the recovery process will be longer than anticipated.
