The Election Commission (EC) yesterday asked returning officers responsible for next month's parliamentary by-polls to take stern action against people violating election code of conduct. The EC after a meeting wrote to the returning officers of Dhaka-10 and Mushiganj-1 constituencies and Chief Election Commissioner MA Syed expressed dissatisfaction over frequent violation of the code and attacks on Bikalpa Dhara supporters, meeting sources said. The supporters of BNP candidate Mosaddek Ali Falu have posted a large number of illegal colored posters and billboards in Dhaka-10 constituency in violation of the election rules. His opponents lodged several allegations accusing him of violating the code. EC secretariat officials told yesterday's meeting that the returning officer of Dhaka-10 constituency on May 18 warned Mosaddek of violation of the code of conduct and asked him to follow the election rules in campaign. The returning officer also warned Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh candidate MA Mannan against violation of the code. The EC said it would discuss deployment of army in the constituencies when it sits to review law and order on May 22. The chief election commissioner earlier in the day assured Mannan, who called on him, of taking steps to ensure security of his supporters in a day and conveying his fears to the home secretary and the Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner. "I will stop my election campaign until you ensure security measures for my activists," Mannan told Syed. Talking to The Daily Star, the Bikalpa Dhara candidate alleged that the government was yet to initiate any step to ensure the security of his party men. "If our activists are not secured, how will we carry out the election campaign? If the situation remains unchanged, we will inform people of our next decision through a press briefing," Mannan said.
