PM briefs Rocca on dev steps

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday apprised the visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Christina Rocca of her government's efforts to consolidate democracy and improve the lot of the common man.

She mentioned the steps in the economic and social sectors as well as reform measures taken to ensure socioeconomic uplift and sought continued support of the friendly countries.

Rocca made a courtesy call on the prime minister at her office in the afternoon.

She lauded Bangladesh's role for global peace and its stance against terrorism.

Rocca said Bangladesh is a moderate Muslim democratic country and the tolerance here is an example for many countries of the world.

"Bangladesh has lots of friends in the US, particularly in the legislature, and all wish Bangladesh well," Rocca was quoted as saying during the meeting with the prime minister.

The US official deeply appreciated the steps taken by Khaleda Zia to protect the rights of children and women in Bangladesh.

Rocca expressed America's keen interest in economic development of Bangladesh, particularly in trade and investment, and growth of industries.
