Traffic resumes after 6 hours on Dhaka-Mawa road

Road communications on Dhaka-Mawa highway remained suspended for six hours yesterday as toll-collectors of Dhaleshwari Bridge vandalised a bus and injured nine people.According to passengers, toll-collectors ransacked a Dohar-bound bus after its driver refused to pay them inflated charge of Tk 160 to cross the bridge at about 11:30am. They also beat the bus driver and eight commuters during the attack. The injured were admitted to local hospital, sources said. Protesting the incident, bus owners and drivers stopped running their vehicles on Dhaka-Barisal, Dhaka-Khulna and Dhaka-Faridpur routes, they added. Normal traffic on the road resumed at 5:30pm following police intervention, locals said. Toll money for passing the bridge was previously fixed at Tk 70, another source said. Bus owner Siddique Mian lodged a case with Keranigonj Police Station.
