UEFA Euro 2004 Portugal
Scolari surprises

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari on Tuesday named his provisional squad for the Euro 2004 finals which the country will host next month, including a first cap for Benfica goalkeeper Moreira.

Moreira has already been called up to play for the under-21 team during the European youth equivalent in Germany from May 27 to June 8.

Scolari said that Moreira was "in very good form because he has trained and played notably in the European under-21 championship."

Another surprise is the return of FC Porto midfielder Maniche who gets a recall after his time spent in the wilderness following Portugal's 3-0 crushing by Spain last September.

Scolari said that versatile attacking midfield Maniche had qualities which they needed in that position including the ability to shoot from midfield.

"I hope that this call up will be something that he never dared dream of," said Scolari.

Tottenham striker Helder Postiga, whose selection had been in the balance, has been included, but notably absences are Fulham striker Luis Boa Morte and Stuttgart defender Fernando Meira.

World Cup winning coach Scolari said that he believed he had found the right combination for "a great team with a competitive spirit."

The Brazilian added that the players would undergo medical tests to judge their aptitude to compete and that he could also draw on the youth team from May 29. "If there is the slightest problem I already have the names in my head and I'm going to drawn in the under-21 category."

Portugal are in Group A along with Greece, Spain and Russia for the competition starting on June 13.
