BNP activists beat restaurant owner

Ruling BNP activists allegedly beat a restaurant manager-cum-owner at Karwan Bazar when he refused to give them Tk 500 which they claimed to have paid a bearer to buy cigarette. Injured Mahfuzur Rahman of Charulata Restaurant at Ambor Shah Masjid market said after the lunch one of them asked him to return Tk 500 without paying the bill. As he refused, they left the restaurant and came back again with about 10 to 15 people who started beating him indiscriminately. They also ransacked the hotel. Of the attackers, Mahfuz identified two as Nasir and Azad, and said most of them were BNP cadres of the area. He was taken to a private clinic for treatment. Talking to this correspondent, Kazimuddin, BNP vice-president of ward No. 39 denied the attack saying that rather they were manhandled by the hotel men. He claimed that the bearers swooped on them injuring one Nasir Uddin Majumder, organising secretary of local Juba Dal unit. Police rushed to the spot but no-one was arrested.
