'Lalon's songs have a universal appeal'
-- Pagla Bablu

Filmgoers who have enjoyed the feature film Lalon by Tanvir Mokammel are full of praise for the captivating voice of Hafizur Rahman Khan Bablu, known as Pagla Bablu, the Lalon singer. He has sung all the songs of the movie and has acted as Dudu Shah, a comrade of Lalon. In addition, Bablu is the chief of the Faridpur Lalon Parishad, the organisation which strives to preserve the true essence of mystic poet and composer Lalon.

Going back in time to recall his singing career, Bablu says, 'Khoda Baksho Shain, the lecturer in the department of mystic music of Shilpakala Academy, was my spiritual teacher. I have completed a three-year fellowship from Shilpakala Academy under Mohin Shah Fakir whom I consider as my mentor. Subsequently, along with some renowned Bauls, I have established the Faridpur Lalon Parishad to promote the unknown Lalon's songs. Montu Shah has already collected 950 pieces of songs. Personally I have memorised 394 songs.'

Enlisted BTV and Radio artiste, Bablu does not like the trend of city singers singing Lalon songs. He says, 'Though this phenomenon is helpful in promoting Lalon songs, these urban singers do not follow the essence and philosophy of Lalon. To them Lalon is a kind of fashion. That is why their presentation lacks heart. Moreover, a true Lalon practitioner must use Ektara (one stringed instrument)and Dugi(a kind of tabla).'

Bablu strongly disapproves of the drug addicts that frequent Lalon's Akhra at Kushtia. In his words,' A Lalon follower should not sell Lalon songs for their bread. Lalon in his songs has taken a strong position against cannabis and other drugs.'

Bablu concludes this discussion with pointing to the universality of Lalon's songs. 'I visited India to take part in the West Bengal folk music festival. I heard from the Indian intellectuals that amongst the Bangladeshi music, they consider only Lalon songs as better than theirs. The mysticism in Lalon's lyrics can be the solution to every problem of the society as it always calls on people not to be cruel to others and to control the natural instincts. Lalon's education can be ideal to the people belonging to any religion as it glorifies only humanity.'

Pagla Bablu is now busy with the recording of an album including eight totally uncommon Lalon songs and four popular pieces.
