Yunus wins Nikkei Asia Prize


The Grameen Bank Managing Director Professor Mohammad Yunus has won this year's Nikkei Asia Prize for Regional Growth.

Japan's prestigious economic daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) awards Nikkei Asia Prizes annually to individuals or institutions from Asia Pacific region. Prizes are awarded for outstanding contribution to regional growth, technological innovation and culture.

Prof Yongyuth Yuthavong of Thailand and Prof Albert Wendt of New Zealand are the other two recipients of this year's Nikkei Asia Prizes in technological innovation and culture categories.

Dr Yunus is selected for this year's award in recognition of his role in pioneering microcredit, which as an innovative approach reached out to millions of poor to help them find a route out of poverty.

The award will be presented in a ceremony on June 2 at Tokyo's Imperial Hotel.

Nikkei introduced the prizes in 1996 to commemorate the company's 120th anniversary. Distingui-shed personalities like Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and former Thai Deputy Prime Minister and current Director General to the World Trade Organisation Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi received Nikkei Asia Prizes in the past.
