Shaheb Ali no more


Former national footballer Sheikh Shaheb Ali passed away yesterday at his residence in Golapbagh. He was 91.

The distinguished player is survived by his wife, three sons, six daughters and a host of admirers.

Shaheb Ali represented the then Pakistan national team and was the first coach of the Bangladesh national team.

After his retirement he served on the executive committee of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).

During his colourful career, Shaheb Ali was one of the architects behind Sonali Otit Club, the organisation of yester-year players. He also received the National Sports Award for football.

The BFF and other sports federations conveyed their deep shock over his death and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul.

Meanwhile, Water Resources Minister Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, also founder of the Sonali Otit, had visited the elderly footballer's house on Monday and handed over Tk 50,000 for his treatment.
