Traffic tails go long as rainwater floods city streets

Rainwater clogged in many city streets after a heavy downpour yesterday evening, creating long line of traffic tails.According to the Met office, the capital experienced 51 millimetres (mm)of rainfall. According to city traffic control office, hundreds of vehicles were stranded in long queue as rainwater flooded the main roads in Sayedabad, Mouchak, Dhanmandi road No. 27 intersection, Asad Gate, Gulistan roundabout, Sadarghat to Gulistan, Farmgate, Mirpur Section10, Mohakhali, Rayerbazaar, Mohammadpur and other areas. In an emergency measure, Dhaka City Corporation deployed workers in various city points to uncover manholes for clearing the waterlogged areas. Sources said rainwater was cleared within one and half hours but traffic backlog continued to turn worse as more vehicles flowed in on streets after the shower stopped. The Met office said 47mm of rain was recorded in Barisal, 30mm in Khulna, 28mm in Maizdee Court, 19mm in Satkhira and 20mm in Chuadanga yesterday. Heavy rainfall is likely in the capital today (Thursday), it forecast.
