Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday said that her government has taken some important and specific measures, including enacting laws, to improve law and order situation.Replying to a question from Jatiya Party member Mashiur Rahman Ranga, she said that with a view to ensuring quick trials of the criminals, the government has enacted several laws including the Speedy Trial Tribunals Act, Acid Offence Prevention Act, Drug Control Act and Anti-Corruption Commission Act. She said that a monitoring cell has been constituted under the leadership of state minister for home to review and monitor those cases. Khaleda said that similarly six monitoring cells have been formed in six divisions with divisional commissioners as chairman while 64 monitoring cells were formed in 64 districts with respective deputy commissioners as chief of the cells. The Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Act was enacted so that the law was not misused, she said. Besides, the number of members of law enforcing agencies including police, BDR and Ansar has been increased to ensure their efficiency. Khaleda said that additional funds have been provided to procure arms and other equipment for the police force. She said that Rapid Action Battalion was formed to handle different kind of crimes. The national drugs control board was also reconstituted, she added. Referring to the 'Clean Heart Operation,' she said that 10,025 criminals were arrested and huge illegal arms and ammunitions were seized during the operation. She said that construction work of 14 district jails have started while a jail exclusively for women convicts at Kashimpur under Gazipur district was also constructed.
