'Provide credit facilities for cold storage'
Staff Correspondent
Speakers at a workshop called on the government to provide credit facilities to the private sector to set up more cold storage for preservation of potato seeds. It is difficult to maintain the quality of potato seeds when it is kept in the cold storage along with potatoes, they said. Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) organised the workshop at its office recently, with BADC Chairman Mohammed Ismail as chief guest. The speakers said the lack of quality seeds is forcing the farmers to use low quality seeds to grow potatoes. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) supplies only 2.3 percent of total demand for seeds, they said. Mohammad Shahidul Islam, director general of the BARI, urged the private organisations to come forward to develop high-yielding potato seeds.
