4 muggers arrested within an hour of incident

Police in separate drives caught three extortionists along with a pipe-gun and sharp weapons from Halishahar area in the city on Tuesday and four muggers from near the Chittagong Shopping Centre on the night before. The extortionists allegedly belong to Jubo Dal, youth front of ruling BNP, police said. Police said the three armed extortionists entered a video shop - Sujan Vedio, and a saloon - Kaderi Saloon-- at Artilary Road in Halishahar for toll at around 1 pm. Being refused, they ransacked the shops and left the scene threatening the shopkeepers of dire consequences. On information, Halishahar thana police rushed and arrested the three extortionists from nearby Fadu Chowdhury Road along with the firearm, one Chinese axe and two daggers. The arrested persons are Rana alias Kutta (dog) Rana, 24, Suman, 27, and Abdul Aziz, 24, reportedly activists of local unit of Juba Dal , youth front of ruling BNP. A case has been filed. In the other incident, a mobile team of Panchlaish thana police led by Sub Inspector Nasir Ahmad challenged four youths near the Chittagong Shopping Centre, seeing their suspicious movement in a microbus at about 10 pm Monday. As they were fleeing, police caught them after a chase and recovered Tk 75,000 and two mobile telephones mugged by them. They are Md. Alam, 28, Sajal Kumar Sarker, 25, Mizanur Rahman, 26, and Md. Raju, 25. Police also seized the microbus. They told police that they snatched Tk one lakh 25 thousand and two mobile phones from Abu Naser, owner of Messers Taher Flour Mill and its manager Abdus Shukkur at gun point at Bayezid Bostami when they were returning to their mill at Rajakhali in the city in a microbus after collecting the money from clients in Hathazari and Raozan. After the arrest, the victims were brought to Panchlaish thana and they identified the muggers, police said.
