21 steps taken to improve power situation : PM

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia said here yesterday that the government had taken 21 steps including setting up of several new power plants for the improvement of overall power system in the country.If implemented, Khaleda said, these steps would add 3,015 MW power to the existing power generation by the year 2007. The prime minister was replying to a question from M Nurul Islam of BNP from Khulna during her question-answer hour at the Jatiya Sangsad. The other steps taken for the improvement of power sector included plan to set up several power centres to increase power generation, corporatarisation of the Ashuganj power plant, turning of the Haripur and Baghabari power plants into strategic business units, decision to turn the PDB into holding companies, programme to introduce computerised power billing system. She expressed the hope that 210 MW Siddhirganj power plant, 80 MW power plant at Tongi and 250 MW Baropukuria power plant would go into operation in July 2004, June 2005 and October 2004 respectively. Khaleda said that energy regulatory act was passed in the light of the national energy policy to make production, transmission and distribution of power sector separate. replying to a question from MAH Selim of BNP from Bagherhat-2, the prime minister said that the government had taken suitable programmes through different ministries for human resource development.
