Theatre carnival begins today

Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) has arranged a 37-day long drama festival titled 'Dhaka Natya Utshob-2004', which starts from today at the Experimental Theatre Stage at Shilpakala Academy. The slogan of the festival is 'Enjoy drama on stage, Come to a new stage.'

In the festival, 37 popular theatrical groups of Dhaka will stage one drama each at 7 p.m. at the Experimental Theatre Stage located at the second floor of the new building of the Shilpakala Academy complex. On the first day of the festival Aranyak Natyadal will stage Mayur Shinghashon by Mannan Heera. Shah Alam Dulal directs the play.

Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) arranged a press conference on this occasion at Shilpakala Academy on June 15.

Mamunur Rashid, Keramat Meola, Liakat Ali Lucky, Saiful Islam Mahmud, Rokeya Rafiq Baby and Nader Chaudhury were present at the press conference.

Liakat Ali Lucky briefed the journalists about the aim of the drama festival.

In response to query by journalists, the chairperson of the session Mamunur Rashid said, 'There were a few problems also when the Mahila Samity stage was opened in 1973. It is the duty of everybody, including the press, to make the Experimental Theatre Stage a popular venue for stage-plays. If we can do it properly, we will be able to go one step forward in solving the theatre hall crisis in the country.'

In the press conference, the leaders of BGTF pointed out that all the major theatre groups of Dhaka are taking part in the festival. They also thanked Uro Cola, the sponsor of the festival, for its help in arranging such a grand festival.
