PM has to answer why crores spent on controversial person: Hasina

Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina has said intransigent attitude of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to nominate a controversial person for the post of OIC (Organisation of Islamic Conference) secretary general has deprived the country of the top job of the organisation.

"Khaleda Zia has spent more than Tk 100 crore for an anti-liberation person. She will have to answer as to why she has spent the taxpayers' hard-earned money," said Hasina, also the Awami League (AL) president.

She was addressing the newly elected Sherpur Bar Association leaders and chairmen of Nalitabari, Sherpur Sadar and Nokla municipalities at the party's central office yesterday.

"When the Muslim ummah needs unity, Khaleda had nominated him (Salauddin Quader Chowdhury) to create trouble…His defeat in the election tarnished country's image," she said.

Hasina said usually OIC secretary general is elected on consensus, but Bangladesh insisted on election. "They did not realise their own position. They lacked farsight… How would they govern the country?" she questioned.

The AL president said a jungle-rule is now prevailing across the country where Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally of the BNP-led four-party alliance, has been carrying out criminal activities across the country through a number of militant communal groups.

"They (Jamaat) are providing training for killing people. Being Muslims, they are training up other Muslims to kill people. Their politics (claimed to be) based on Islam is nothing but rhetoric," she alleged.

Referring to women's reserved seats in parliament, Hasina said if Awami League is voted back to power, they would provide 100 reserved seats for women and arrange direct election for them.

Awami League leaders Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP and Motia Chowdhury were present while Sherpur district AL President Atiur Rahman Atiq MP, Sherpur Bar President Narayan Chandra Hore, General Secretary Mukhlesur Rahman, Nalitabari Pourasabha Chairman Abdul Halim Ukil, Nokla Pourasabha Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman and Sherpur Sadar Pourasabha Chairman Golam Kibria Liton spoke.
