Diploma Medical Assoc stages hunger strike

Bangladesh Diploma Medical Association staged a daylong token hunger strike yesterday demanding immediate implementation of the government decision to rename medical assistants in upazila health complexes and union health and family welfare centres as sub-assistant community medical officers.The association earlier gave a June 17 deadline to the Directorate of Health for the implementation of the decision. "We have been demonstrating for the last eight years to press our demand, but the Directorate of Health seems indifferent," said Bishwas Swapan Kumar, former secretary general of the association. More than 50 medical assistants took part in the hunger strike at Muktangan in the capital from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The association also announced a series of programmes to press home its demand. It will submit a memorandum to the prime minister on August 21 if their demand is not met by August 20. Association President M Shahidur Rahman Babu, secretary general Dilip Kumar Sarkar, organising secretary Belal Hossain, and other leaders took part the in the hunger strike.
