Hasina asks AL men to canvass for Mannan

Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has asked her party's Dhaka city unit leadership to engage its activists in campaigning for Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh nominee Abdul Mannan in Dhaka-10 by-polls.

On Wednesday night, she gave the instruction at a meeting with Dhaka city AL President Mohammad Hanif and General Secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.

The main opposition did not field any candidate of its own in the by-election, billed for July 1.

Political analysts see the AL's support for Mannan as a significant development since Mosaddek Ali Falu, ruling coalition candidate in the by-polls, is a strong contender.

Some other opposition political parties including the Workers Party of Bangladesh and Gono Forum also voiced support for the Bikalpa Dhara nominee in the by-election.
