Sex workers hostage to police, brokers in brothels

Brothel-based sex workers are exploited and repressed by police, brokers and their house-owners over the ages, reveals a study of Piact Bangladesh, a non-government organisation. The study was conducted recently at Doulatdia brothel by organising 10 workshops. Twenty sex workers took part in each workshop. According to the study, sex workers are hostage to police and brokers in brothels and they don't have minimum human rights. The major earning of sex workers goes to the pocket of police, brokers and house-owners while sex workers keep their body and soul together with the remaining meager income, the study added. The findings of the study were discussed at a seminar on 'Human Rights of Socially Disadvantaged Women and Children' organised by Piact Bangladesh at the National Press Club yesterday. Journalists from different newspapers and Joint Secretary Nasrin Jahan of the law ministry participated in the seminar. Hazera, a sex worker of Doulatdia brothel, said in an emotion-choked voice, "We are repressed in many ways. We were not born as prostitute, but unfortunately we have become sex workers." "We have got a way to enter into this profession but we are not getting any way to leave it," she added. Hazera said people go to them for recreation but they don't like to recognise them as human being. "We have to conceal our identity even to get treatment from doctor," she added. Hazera urged the government to arrange some facilities for them in the brothel including clinic and electricity. Sur Banu, another sex worker, expressed similar sentiment at the seminar. Executive Director of Bangladesh Manobadhikar Sangbadik Forum Khairuzzaman Kamal, Director of Piact Bangladesh Abu Yusuf Chowdhury, and Advocate Ela Chanda of Ain O Salish Kendra spoke at the seminar.
