'Pichchi' Hannan nabbed hurt in Savar clinic
Co-gangster dies on way to DMCH

Elite Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) force yesterday arrested 'Pichchi' Hannan, one of the top 23 criminals on police list, and two of his operatives, one of whom died at a city hospital in circumstances shrouded in mystery.

Hannan, Shaheb Ali and Debashish were nabbed at a Savar Hospital at about 6:00pm, a day after shooting their way through police dragnet in Uttara.

Debashish was captured unhurt, a Rab official said, but doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said they found him dead on arrival at 11:50pm.

A Daily Star correspondent found his hands and legs broken at joints, but no fatal injury to his head that a Rab officer claimed he suffered in scuffles after arrest.

Major Hafizul Islam Khan claimed Debashish sustained head injury in a police van on way to the elite force's headquarters.

"When we found him sick at Rab office at around 10:30pm, our doctor referred him to the DMCH," he stressed, adding autopsy report will reveal the cause of his death.

Shaheb was admitted to the Orthopaedic Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with his hands and legs broken.

Hannan, who was dubbed by police as a byword for crimes and atrocities and carried a bounty of Tk 1 lakh on his head, took admission to Insaf General Hospital near Sreepur Bus Stand after Friday's firefight that gave him bullet wounds to his abdomen.

Acting on a tip-off, a 12-member team of Rab-1 raided the hospital to arrest Hannan, who was dodging arrest for two and a half years.

"Suffering injury in Friday's shootout, I went to Savar and my accomplice Helal kept me at a house. The next day Helal's brother admitted me to the hospital where doctors operated upon me," Hannan told reporters lying on the floor at Rab office.

"The 12-member team led by Captain Alamgir barged into the first floor hospital cabin where Hannan was undergoing treatment on a bed with his bodyguard Shaheb Ali on another with bullet injury to his waist," said Lieutenant Colonel Bari, Commanding Officer (CO) of Rab Battalion 1.

Debashish was on guard at the cabin door.

When the Rab team, with six members undercover, challenged him, Hannan tried to hide his identity, saying he was a resident of Savar and suffered wounds in a car crash.

"As we asked him whether he suffered a bullet wound, Hannan offered Tk 20 lakh in bribes and asked for his cellphone, one of the two we seized, to immediately arrange the cash," the CO said.

"We demanded Tk one crore in an attempt to establish his identity and he instantly agreed to seal the deal at Tk 50 lakh. We took no time to arrest him."

After the arrests, the raiding team started for Dhaka and a strong 40-memebr team from the headquarters advanced towards Savar to reinforce security cover.

The teams met on the Ashulia Road and jointly escorted the arrestees to the capital.

Hannan said he returned home from India six months ago and was on the run in Dhaka.

During his stay in India, he said he met two other top listed criminals -- Kala Jahangir and Subrata Bain -- in Murshidabad.

Son of Wazi Ullah of Santoshpur village of Faridganj Upazila in Chandpur, Hannan stands accused in as many as 23 cases filed with Tejgaon, Mirpur, Uttara and Mohammadpur police stations, police said quoting primary statistics immediately after his arrest.

Early Friday, a 40-member team of the elite anti-crime unit hemmed in house No.2 on Khwaja Garib-e-Newaz Avenue in Uttara Sector 11 at around 12:30am on information that Hannan and four other top criminals were holding a secret meeting there.

As they knocked on the door, the criminals opened it and shot at the law enforcers at the first sight, sending the members of the elite anticrime force to duck for shelter. The criminals engaged in a fierce firefight and traded at least 150 shots with the Rab team before dashing into a car parked in front of the house and speeding away, leaving two law enforcers and one criminal wounded.

Hannan took bullets in the abdomen and had been at different clinics in the city, but stayed at none of them overnight fearing arrest. Rab also yesterday raided his house at Kanthalbagan apart from looking for him in Uttara since the incident.

Intelligence sources said Hannan and top four criminals were holding the meeting on Thursday night to plot the killing of a former lawmaker who resigned a few months back.

A Dhaka court handed down life term to Hannan in Advocate Habibur Rahman Mondol murder case.

Police pressed charges against him for his link to the killing of Dhaka City Corporation Commissioner Shahdat Hossain Sikder in Uttara on September 29 last year.

The notorious criminal has his operatives working across the capital with strongholds in Tejgaon, Shyampur and Dhanmondi.

Uttara police yesterday filed three cases against Hannan and eight others, one for assault on police, one for possession of illegal arms and the other for possessing banned drugs, on the basis of early Friday's gunfight and the seizure from the place of occurrence.

The other accused are Babul Mia, Mustafizur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, Tuku, Motaleb, Nurul Huda Shakil, Nitel, Saheb Ali and Ali.

Police produced Babul Mia, Mustafiz, Rafiq, Tuku and Motaleb, who were arrested during Friday's gunfight, to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka.

The court sent them to Dhaka Central Jail.

Nurul Huda Shakil, who was also arrested during the gunfight, is now undergoing treatment at a city hospital under police custody.
