Staff Correspondent
The state of nearly 1 lakh people marooned in flood-ravaged areas in Moulvibazar, Sylhet and Comilla remained unchanged until yesterday with continued monsoon rain submerging vast areas.Armed forces have been deployed to tame the Gumti river in Comilla, as the Flood Information Centre (FIC) said both the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma basins registered further rise at all points. The Jamuna river rose to dangerous level at Mohorapara point in Shariakandi triggering landslides in Kalitola, as the right bank along Antarpara, Dhap, Isamara, Kamalpur and Godakhali have been severely eroded, according to our Bogra correspondent. The duty officer of Shariakandi upazila told The Daily Star that some parts of the upazila complex are at risk as the Jamuna is currently flowing 50 meters off some buildings. UNB adds: Army personnel camped in Kushumpur in Comilla are repairing the embankment with earth and sand with help of locals fearing the worst as breaches widened at Kushumpur, Ramchan-drapur, and Etbarpur. Rivers have crossed the danger marks with the Surma overflowing at Kanaighat point, the Kushiyara at Amalshid, Sheola and Sherpur, the Manu at Manu Railway Bridge and Moulavibazar, and the Khowai at Habiganj.
