AL seeks vote for Mannan

Awami League (AL) leaders yesterday urged balloters of the Dhaka-10 constituency to vote for Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) candidate MA Mannan in the July 1 by-election."Hand no-confidence to the present government by rejecting its candidate in the upcoming by-polls," said AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil at a rally at Muktangon. He said the BNP-Jamaat coalition has no right to cling to power anymore as it completely failed to govern the country. The rally was organised by the Dhaka city unit of AL to protest against the recent bomb attack on a meeting of the party's senior leader Suranjit Sengupta in Sunamganj. Leading AL leader Tofail Ahmed meanwhile accused the alliance high ups of hatching a conspiracy to rig the by-poll. Ruling coalition goons are disrupting Bikalpa Dhara election campaign every day but the government is reluctant to deploy army on the polls day, he said. Abdul Jalil said the government came to power with a pledge to provide security for all but they failed to ensure that. On the Sunamganj incident, Jalil said, "The attack was pre-planned as the government has plotted to kill all popular AL leaders to stop its downfall." Mofazzal Hossain Maya said it is pointless to ask the government for punishment of criminals behind the bomb attack as it has failed to arrest a single criminal as yet. The AL leaders also decried crude comments on Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina and Suranjit by BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury. They urged all to make AL's July 3 hartal a success. Presided over by Mohammed Hanif, the rally was also addressed by Obaidul Kader, Mukul Bose, Abdul Mannan and Sheikh Bazlur Rahman.
