Hasina again blames govt for failure to rule country

Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina yesterday once again blamed the ruling four-party alliance for its failure to run the country properly and said people now want a change through unseating the present government.

"This alliance government has to be pulled down because of its failure in every respect -- widespread corruption, violence and politicisation of all sectors, which are leading the country towards destruction", the opposition leader said while addressing a party delegation from Banaripara of Barisal.

Describing the ruling alliance as an ineffective government, the AL chief said, "For the last two and half years, people are living in a panicky situation."

Referring to the killing of two policemen in the capital recently reportedly by the cadres of BNP's student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, she said, "Nobody, even the law enforcers are secured". … At least 123 policemen were killed during the present regime."

The opposition leader alleged that government is planning to produce 17 naval officers before court martial, just to oust them from the force and recruit pro-government people.

Over 2500 armed forces officers were killed during late president Ziaur Rahman's regime, Hasina added.

Hasina received the news of veteran freedom fighter and columnist MR Akhter Mukul's death just before she started her speech and expressed her deep shock at his demise. She also recalled Mukul's contribution during the Liberation War.

Senior AL leaders were also present on the occasion.
