13 journos killed in SW in 10 years

Thirteen journalists including four editors were killed in the last 10 years in the south-western region, a safe haven for underground operatives and criminals for decades.Of the dead, five were in Khulna, four in Jessore, two in Jhenaidah, and one each in Chuadanga and Satkhira. Apart from yesterday's murder of Humayun Kabir Balu, editor of Dainik Janmabhumi, all the four other killings in Khulna were carried out in the last three years. Nahor Ali of Dainik Anirban was killed in April, 2001, Shukur Hossain of Dainik Anirvan in 2001, Sheikh Haroon-ar-Rashid of Dainik Purbanchal in March, 2002 and Manik Chandra Saha of The New Age on January 15, 2004. In Jessore, Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury of Dainik Sphulingo was murdered in 1994, Faruq Hossain of Dainik Runner in 1995, Saiful Alam Mukul of Dainik Runner on August 30, 1998, and Shamsur Rahman of Dainik Janakantha on July 16, 2000. Criminals killed the correspondent of Jhenaidah's Dainik Birdar-pan Rezaul Karim Reza in 1998 and the paper's Editor Mir Elias Hossain Dilip on January 15, 2000. Editor of Dainik Patradut SM Alauddin was killed in Satkhira on June 19, 1996 and Bazlur Rahman of Dainik Din Badal in Chuadanga in 1998. Only the murder cases of Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury and Faruk Hossain saw verdict so far in which seven convicted got life term. In the Patradut editor murder case, six are now on bail, two in jail and two others in hiding. Besides, the chargesheet of sensational Manik Saha murder case was submitted against 13 accused recently.
