'Empowerment of women a major thrust of dev policy'

Women's empowerment contributes a major policy thrust of the Bangladesh government, said Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations.

He said, "In women's empowerment, Bangladesh has a good story to share with the world."

He was speaking at a ministerial roundtable on 'Women and empowerment' at the UN Headquarters on Thursday.

The ambassador said Bangladesh believed that the problems of development must be comprehensively addressed, of which women's empowerment strategies are a critical component.

In Bangladesh, he said, innovative ideas like micro-credit and education together with healthcare and other social projects have mainstreamed women in the development agenda, as demonstrated by social and economic indicators.

Bangladesh's programmes are also praised in the meeting by LDC-Watch, an NGO, and Executive Director James T Morris of the World Food Programme.
