Welcoming AL to parliament
Shahjahan Ahmed, Dhanmandi RA, Dhaka
The return of the Awami League to the Parliament is the most unexpected piece of good news for this unfortunate country of ours. Everybody who has the minimum love for the country is keeping his/her finger crossed and praying that the good sense that has prevailed upon the opposition would be sustainable. We are now looking forward to the government to do its turn and see that the AL is made to feel comfortable in the Parliament and allowed to play its proper role as the watchdog for the public against any arbitrariness from the Government. We are in particular requesting the Prime Minister, the Speaker and the Government whips in Parliament to keep their members in check so that no member of the ruling party un-necessarily provokes the opposition members and thereby giving them the opportunity to walk out of the Parliament. To the Opposition and particularly to the leader of the Opposition, we are appealing for making sincere efforts to stay in Parliament and slowly bring to this revered institution all the grievances they have against the Government from the streets. Our lives have been shattered and our future almost on the brink of being lost as politics has continued to remain where it should not; where politics has ruined our economy and our future. The Awami League should have this confidence in the people that if they succeed in articulating the faults of the Government within the fore walls of the Parliament, they will be able to reach the people more effectively and better than doing so through hartals that the people have rejected from their hearts. The AL should also know that one pillar of a democratic society, that of freedom of the press, has been very well established in Bangladesh and if they work for people's welfare against Government's perceived misuse of power, and if they are correct in their perceptions, the people will know of their role much better than they would through street agitation and hartals for they can rest assured that their role in Parliament will be truly reflected in the Press. Bangladesh's future is in the hands of the politicians. All other components for development are in place like rising rate of literacy; decline in poverty; impressive GDP growth rate, etc. If the politicians now unite for a common sense of purpose, then we would surely hop, step and jump to a bright future in the not too distant a future. We would like to thank Sheikh Hasina for her decision to lead her party to the Parliament. Now she should take another step and end hartals from our politics. Now it is for the Prime Minister to respond and respond she must and positively if she loves Bangladesh.
