The Indian arm of Swiss-Swedish engineering giant ABB said Tuesday its second quarter net profit rose 39 percent on year due to strong growth in its power business. ABB India said its net profit rose to 306 million rupees (6.7 million dollars) from 220 million rupees a year ago after "extraordinary items", which included the sale of its metering business worth 233 million rupees. Revenues leapt 56 percent to 5.3 billion rupees, the chief of Indian operations, Ravi Uppal, told reporters. "Orders are up 48 percent to 12.5 billion rupees and the enquiry pipeline looks very promising," Uppal said, referring to new and existing clients' orders to buy equipment. "If one looks at a three year chart from 2001 the orders have shot up three times." He said nearly 50 percent of the company's business came from its power technologies division. "The firm will has already invested half of 800 million rupees in the last six months for expansion and modernisation of its plants. A new global technology centre was also set up in India," Uppal said.
