Novartis net profit rises 19pc

The Swiss pharmaceutical group Novartis on Tuesday reported a 19 percent rise in first-half net profit to 2.84 billion dollars (2.28 billion euros) from a year earlier and predicted annual results could reach new records. Novartis said in a statement that it expected to report "markedly higher" operating and net profit for 2004 as a whole even though the group was aiming to accelerate investment in research and development during the second half.
