Phultala BNP secy, 6 cadres arrested

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Phultala thana BNP General Secretary Aluddin Mithu and six of his associates at Daulatpur when they were coming towards Khulna in a jeep and recovered two short guns and a revolver from their possession.

Mithu, a listed criminal of Phultala upazila, could not produce any legal documents to carry these arms. Rab seized the arms and the jeep.

Six other arrestees were identified as Iqbal Hossain, Selim Sareng, Sohel Parvez, Yunus Ali, Saiduzzaman Pavel and Sohel Sarder. They are cadres of Mithu who heads a criminal group known as 'Mithu Bahini'. All the arrested are being quized in the Rab headquarters at Khalishpur.

Mithu is a son of slain chairman Sarder Abul Kashem of Phultala Union Parishad. Kashem was gunned down by the outlaws in 1998 at the office of Phultala Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).

Mithu could not be arrested so far due to political influence that encouraged him to commit crimes under the cover of the ruling party, Plultala thana sources said.
