Duta demands security for teachers

Dhaka University Teachers' Association (Duta) yesterday demanded security for the teachers and their family members who received death threats.

At least 10 teachers of the university have received death threats in last two months, said Duta President Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique at a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar.

The Islamist zealots were issuing death threats to those who practice freethinking, he said.

Duta General Secretary Prof Aktheruzzaman said the government has failed to head off the growing fanaticism in the country.

He urged the government and the university authorities to ensure security of all teachers.

Earlier, the Duta members marched on the campus in a silent procession to protest the death threats.
