Jhalakati Bomb Explosion
2 journos, municipal chairman among 14 chargesheeted


Jhalakati District and Sessions Judge Asgar Ali on Sunday issued a warrant of arrest against 14 absconding accused including the newly elected chairman of Jhalakathi municipality and two journalists in connection with bomb explosion in the town before the municipal election.

The warrants have been issued against journalist Azmir Hossain Talukder, correspondent of national daily Dinkal and regional daily Ajker Paribarton; his brothers Halim Talukder, Zahid Hossain Talukder and Zakir Hossain Talukder; journalist Akkas Sikder, correspondent of national daily Bhorrer Kagoj; Abdul Halim Gazi, newly elected Jhalakati municipality chairman; his brother Bappi Gazi; Tipu Sultan, Kabir Hossain Howlader, Jagannath Saha, Mahbub Alam Khan, Tawhid Hossain, Liton Sikder and Kazi Imran Hossain.

A powerful bomb went off at Hoglapatty in Jhalakati near a residential building owned by the family of journalist Azmir Hossain at about 11 am on May 6 this year, three days ahead of the municipal election.

One Dalim was killed on the spot and six others including Abdus Sattar Babul alias Boma Babul, an alleged bomb maker, were injured. Hands of Abdus Sattar Babul blew off in the incident. Police filed a case on the same day under Section 4 of the Explosives Act, alleging that the explosion took place during bomb making to create turmoil during the municipal election.

Jhalakati Sadar thana Officer-in-charge Mozzammel Huq filed a charge sheet against five persons.

Later, following appeal by Public Prosecutor Md Yunus Ali for re-investigation, the matter was probed again on orders from the Additional Police Superintendent and a fresh charge sheet was submitted on Thursday last after five weeks accusing 14 people.
