Top Indian communist leader dead


One of the founder members of the communist movement in India, Hiren Mukhopadhaya passed away on yesterday at government hospital here. He was 97. Mukhopadhaya was a five-time elected member of the Indian Parliament. He was also a member of the CPI national council from 1958 to 1938.

Hiren Mukhopadhaya was born on November 23, 1907 in Kolkata. After passing out from Presidency College here, Mukhopadhya did his masters from Oxford University in England. In 1934, he became a barrister. He was taught at the Andhra and Kolkata University. In 1990 Mukhopadhaya was awarded the Padmabhusan and a year later he received the prestigious Padmabibhusan award.

With most of the top CPIM leaders away in Delhi, Mukhopadhaya's body was not cremated yesterday. It will be done tomorrow.
