Major non-government organisations (OGOs) like Oxfam and CARITAS have launched relief operation in flood affected areas. Some smaller local NGOs, socio-cultural bodies and individuals have also come up to stand by the affected people in different areas. Our Gaibandha Correspondent reports: Oxfam has started distributing relief packages to flood affected people in shoal areas of Teesta and Brahmaputra basins in the district. The package includes 64 kg rice, 8 kg pulse, 5 litre edible oil, 4 kg salt, soap, saree, laungi, mosquito net and bucket, worth over Tk two thousand for each family. Its programme, launched on Wednesday, will cover 8000 families. A total 1500 flood affected families in different shoals got relief packages on the first day. This is part of a Tk 1.6 crore emergency relief programme, jointly sponsored by the European Commission for Humanitarian Office (ECHO) for survival of the flood affected people of Gaibandha. The distribution will continue till August 8 through its partner organisations Gano Unnayan Kendro, Samaj Kallan Sangstha, Akoto and Samokal, all local NGOs. The programme was inaugurated by Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Mosley Uddin at Chowmohan flood shelter in Fazlupur in Fulchari upazila. Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Tapan Chandra Majumder, Oxfam representatives Elora Ferdoushi and Kabita Bosh and Gano Unnayan Kendro Chief Executive Abdus Salam also spoke on the occasion. The Divisional Commissioner told the distressed people that the government will rehabilitate the flood affected people. "We must face the situation through united efforts of the district administration, NGOs and donor agencies", he said and appreciated Oxfam's help in time of need. Kabita Bosh said Oxfam is always with destitute people and will extend all possible help to that they can stand on their feet. "It is a right of distressed people to have relief", said Elora Ferdoushi. Oxfam has been working for the distressed people in Gaibandha since 1987 and helping them fight natural disasters like flood, drought and monga. It has also introduced a large scale programme for development of shoal people. Our Netrakona Correspondent reports: Different non-government organisation are distributing relief among flood affected people in the district. CARITAS has distributed 15 kg rice, 3 kg pulses, one kg salt, 10 litre soyabeen to each of 4500 families in 14 upazilas in greater Mymensingh and one upazila in Sunamganj district. The upazilas are Durgapur, Kalmakanda and Purbadhala in Netrokona district; Dubaura, Fulpur and Haluaghat in Mymensingh; Nolithabari, Jinaigathi, Shreebardi and Sherpur Sadar in Sherpur; Modhupur in Tangail; Nikli in Kishoreganj; Dewanganj and Mathusgonj in Jamalpur and Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district, according to Chitta Rangon Sangma, its Regional Director in Mymensingh. BRAC distributed relief materials worth Tk 14 lakh in ten upazilas in Netrokona. The relief included flattened rice, molasses and biscuits. The World Vision, Bangladesh distributed 5 kg wheat, one kg sugar, 125 gm powder milk, one kg salt and three packet oral saline to each of 4,000 families in Durgapur upazila in Netrakona. Our Bogra Correspondent reports: World Vision (WV) distributed 12,00 kg rice, 200 kg pulse, 100 kg salt, 200 kg flatted rice (chira), 100 kg molasses and 1,000 saline packets among 100 flood affected families in the town on July 25, sources said yesterday. Shiper-Al-Bakhtier, Ward Commissioner distributed the relief materials in presence of WV Area Development Project (ADP) Manager Pintu Aring and other officials of World Vision Bogra unit were also present. The Bogra Foundation also distributed relief packages including five kg rice, saree and lunghi each among 500 families in flood-hit Shariakandi Upazila, its chairman Anis Ahmed said. Nishindara Fakir Uddin School and College authorities give Tk 10,000 to the Prime Minister's relief found. Our RU Correspondent reports: Rajshahi University Pharmacy Department on Thursday started preparing oral saline packets at its laboratory for distribution among flood affected people. RU Vice Chancellor Prof Faisul Islam Faruki inaugurated the work by making a saline while Science Faculty Dean Prof Nurul Absar also present. The students prepared 1500 saline packets on the first day and distributed those among affected people in Bagmara. Every day, they will make 15,00 packets, department's chairman Dr Aslam Hossain told this correspondent. The students also collected medicine sand distributed those among flood victims. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Bangladesh Chhatra Federation (BCF) and Samajtrantik Chhatra Front (SCF) also set up camps on the campus to collect relief. Our Manikganj Correspondent reports: Motalib Plaza Shop Owners Welfare Association in Dhaka has distributed 3,000 kg rice, 700 kg flattened rice, 80 kg sugar and 800 candles among 600 flood affected families in the Daulatpur upazila. BRAC also distributed flattened rice, sugar, bread and biscuits worth about Tk 12 lakh among 42,753 families in the district. Basundhara Group and Monno Group also distributed relief in the affected areas. A BSMMU press release says: Prof Dr M A Hadi, Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) distributed five tonnes of rice among about 1,000 flood-affected families in Gaforgaon upazilla in Mymensingh.
