Declare flood a national disaster: Menon

Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon on Thursday called upon the government to declare the devastating flood as a national disaster.

He told this while addressing a citizens' condolence meeting organised by the party's district unit in memory of late communist leader Dr Keshab Chandra Samajdar as chief guest. The meeting was held at local pourasabha auditorium.

Condemning Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for her reluctance to stand by the flood victims, he suggested formation of an All-party National Disaster Management Committee to tackle flood.

Chaired by advocate Mustafa Lutfullah, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Satkhira Bar Association President advocate Abdur Rahim, Workers Party central leader Azizur Rahman, journalist Prof Abu Ahmed, Kalyan Banerjee, Prof Mainul Hasan, chairman Sabbir Ahmed, Kazem Ali and Kudrat-e-Khoda.

Late Dr Keshab who was exiled in the Andaman islands in 1932 for his revolutionary role in the independence struggle of Indian sub-continent died here at the age of 91 on July 7.
