Twenty Years After Breaking Up
Pradip Kaur (translated by Farhad Ahmed)
How do I talk with you again? 'It's very hot here'? 'Really, already it's winter there?’ 'Should I turn off the fan?' 'That curtain is divine'? 'Want a drink of water?' 'You were so good at making sherbet'… Thick lenses on your glasses: their numbers gone up? Silver hairs on both sides of the scarlet streak advertise individuality...a maharani... You still read poetry? What about songs? Still startled awake from midnight sleep by Srijukto Atulprasad? Still awakened by thunderstorms? Get scared? Remember how you would cover your ears when the class bell rang? And that little scar beneath your ear..... So much talk, so many words, how can the body's tumult be silent, noiseless? You tell me, how do I talk with you again?
