20 bus counters burnt to ashes

Supporters of the indefinite transport strike against illegal toll in the district yesterday set fire to 20 establishments and counters of different bus services to protest the death of a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader.Police constable Rawshan Ali was seriously hurt in a clash between cops and agitating people in Miapara Road at 10:00am. He was admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital. The agitating people burnt the counters of the Comfort Line, Rajdhani Express, Palash Paribahan, Tungipara Express, Dola Paribahan, Rajib Paribahan, Madhumati Paribahan at noon. Two motorcycles, one belonging to the officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Police Station, were also set ablaze. Black flags were hoisted atop all educational institutes, business centres, private houses and offices of political parties to deprecate the death of BCL leader Rakib Hossain Tusher in a clash between pro-strike pickets and BNP activists on Friday. Tusher's Namaaj-e-Janaja was held on the premises of Bangabandhu University College after Zohr prayers yesterday. Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina, lawmakers Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Faruque Khan, Sahjahan Khan and AL Religious Secretary Mohammad Abdullah were present on the occasion. The AL chief and central leaders visited Tusher's house and consoled his bereaved family. BCL activists of Kashiani upazila have meanwhile captured a local BNP leader to protest the killing of Tusher, a reliable source said.
