30 policemen face punitive action

A police sergeant has been suspended and 29 traffic policemen have been closed to the police lines for their alleged neglect of duty.

Action against so many policemen at one stroke on orders of the DIG, Rajshahi Range, has created panic among the servicemen.

Traffic Sergeant Mohiuddin in the town was suspended on July 28. Four traffic sergeants, four havilders and 21 traffic constables of Kodda and Hatikumrul camps on the western side of Jamuna Bridge were closed to the police lines the next day.

Informed sources said the action against the traffic police was taken on allegation of extortion of tolls from passing vehicles.

There was no traffic police on the western side of the bridge for the last four days. Absence of traffic police did not create any impediment to vehicular movement, said a police officer asking not to be named.
