UN team in city to assess flood damage

A six-member high-powered team of experts of the United Nations arrived here Saturday to assess the damage caused by the current floods and prepare an appeal for aid to the world community for post-flood rehabilitation.The team from Geneva-based Office of the Coordination for Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) of the UN is expected to start field visit for assessment in two days. Alan Mathus of the OCHA is leading the team. Highly placed sources said the team will stay in Bangladesh for a few weeks to support the UN on behalf of Bangladesh to prepare the appeal process, which will call upon concerned international bodies and countries for post-flood reconstruction and rehabilitation in Bangladesh. On the first day of its move, the team met Minister for Food, Disaster Management and Relief Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf at his secretariat office and discussed the floods, losses and damage of infrastructure, crops and other issues.
