FM tells vice-governor of Yunnan Province

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan yesterday said that the `Kunming Initiative' was a milestone in Bangladesh-China relation.

Morshed Khan said this when Shao Qiwei, vice-governor of Yunnan Province of China, called on him at his office yesterday.

He said there are enormous scopes to reap mutual benefit by establishing road communication through Myanmar.

He said that after establishing road link with Kunming in the southern part of China, the region's trade, commerce and tourism facilities would increase manifold.

Bangladesh and Myanmar agree on the establishment of direct road and both the countries are moving towards its construction, he told the Yunnan Vice-Governor.

The foreign minister said China is an old and tested friend of Bangladesh and reiterated support to one-China policy.

The Vice-Governor expressed his country's keenness to strengthen cooperation in road and air communications, tourism, and trade and commerce for mutual benefit of Bangladesh and China, especially the Yunnan Province.

Shao Qiwei requested Bangladesh to send a ministerial level delegation to Kunming by the year end at the 5th BCIM Forum to be held in Kunming, popularly known as Kunming Initiative, that would bring together Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar.

Morshed Khan underscored the need for coming forward with specific areas of cooperation and landmark projects at the 5th anniversary of `Kunming Initiative'.

Chinese Ambassador Chai Xi was present at the meeting.
