Execution of verdict demanded

The Awami Jubo League yesterday demanded immediate execution of the verdict in Bangabandhu Murder Case.It also formed a human chain in front of the Supreme Court to mark the 29th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founding father of the nation. The main opposition Awami League has also taken a month-long programme to mourn the deaths of Bangabandhu and his family members who were killed on August 15 in 1975. Fifteen former army officers were awarded death penalty by the trial court in the Bangabandhu Murder Case on November 8 in 1998. Later, the High Court upheld the death sentence on 12 accused. The appeal petition is still pending with the Supreme Court. Speaking at the human chain programme, AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said the name of Bangabandhu can never be erased from the history and the new generation will "surely find out their roots." He criticised the government for inserting the name of late president Ziaur Rahman as proclaimer of the Liberation War into the reprint of 'Bangladesher Swadhinata Juddha: Dalilpatra'. Bashir Ahmed, secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said the government should execute the verdict as soon as possible to ensure the rule of law. General Secretary of Jubo League Mirza Azam, lawyer Eusuf Hossain Humayun, Sidur Rahman and Fazlul Haq Atiq also spoke. Jubo League Chairman Jahangir Kabir Nanak presided.
