Dengue spreads...
An ill fated resident, Dhaka
An English daily has headlined "Dengue spreads fast. . ." Similar reports are regularly published in The Daily Star, and many other newspapers. They all report that the life endangering disease, dengue, caused by Aides mosquito, is alarmingly on the rise while other types of mosquitoes are also making our life hellish. At our small community at the 'K' block of Mohammadpur Pisciculture, Housing and Farming Cooperative Society, drains are not cleaned for years. When one brings this issue to the attention of the authorities of the Society either the matter is ignored or the cleaning job is done superficially. The roadside drain is refilled in no time. Another drain lying on the boundary of the Society has not been cleaned for nearly a decade, letting all kinds of weeds and wild growth to take over the dirt filled drain and its sides. The air is wafting obnoxious odour while letting the stagnant water to breed mosquitoes of all kinds. The health department of the City Corporation has many excuses for not cleaning the drain, seriously affecting the health of residents of the seven multi-storeyed buildings adjacent to the drain. The Chief of the Health Department says that the drain lies on a disputed land; hence they cannot do anything while the concerned Regional Office says that the land belongs to the Housing Authority, hence they are helpless. Meanwhile the file is bouncing from one table to the other. When will it come to an end?
