Holding tax
Sajjad Waheed, Dhaka
You are well aware of the fact that the present Dhaka City Corpoartion administration has decided to increase the holding tax of the houses with effect from this year. The new holding tax is fixed at 12% of the net income that will emerge after necessary deductions. The City Corporation has forgotten that there is another department in the country called "Income Tax". All the house owners in the country should pay their income tax each year regardless whether they are in Dhaka or elsewhere in the country, and there is no mercy from this 'revenue generating' department. Now, the DCC's proposal did not include the payment that the residents are required to make in income tax each year . We think the DCC should also think over this issue. There are a few more issues that we should address. If a family in Dhaka has got a house, and they are solely dependent on the house rent ; this newly imposed holding tax is too much for them. Moreover, many people are telling that keeping only two months' rent for maintenance is not enough in this present high-priced, tight budgeted market. Also, there are many occasions where a house owner has to contribute a lot of money simply because he owns a house in the City of Dhaka. Besides, the DCC did not take any measure to prevent the spread of dengue in the City in the recent years; the drainage system is not working - as a result Dhaka quickly sinks under rain water within half-an-hour of any type of rainfall. There are many other problems that have to be addressed. The residents of this city are not only frustrated with the service of the DCC, they are also very much annoyed with the DCC authorities for this new tax imposed on them.
