Ex-UP chairman killed, 10 abducted

Criminals yesterday in two separate incidents gunned down a former Union Parishad chairman and abducted 10 people in the district, police said.Up to 12 unknown assailants broke into the house of Shukra Chakma, 42, in Kharikata in the early morning. They shot him point-blank and left him dead on the spot. In Dabua Bazar in Kawkhali, up to 35 hoodlums abducted 10 indigenous people at gunpoint yesterday noon, police said. Police said the gunmen -- Sai Lui Karbary, 55, Mong Thoai Marma, 30, Pai Aung Marma, 40, Chong Pai Marma, 38, U Chi Mong, 37, Aung Chi Thoai Marma, 27, Katchanong Marma, 22, and Cha Thoai Marma, 32, -- allegedly pro-peace supporters, swooped on their rival United Peoples Democratic Front's (UPDF) supporters and picked up 10 of them. Army personnel rushed the spot and were conducting a drive in search of the victims, police said.
