The government is trying to make Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) more service-oriented, said Communications Minister Nazmul Huda at a roundtable yesterday. "BRTC is not supposed to compete with private owners, but we want to set an example for them by improving the public service," he added. The roundtable on 'Road communication, passenger service and consumer rights' was organised by the Consumers' Association of Bangladesh (CAB) in the city. The minister alleged that some private bus owners encourage their men to attack the BRTC buses as passengers prefer to travel by those buses. He said although some private bus owners made money over the years, they are reluctant to replace their old vehicles by new ones. Huda assured that he would pursue the authorities concerned to table the consumers' rights bill in the next session of parliament. He said thousands of drivers across the country are driving their vehicles without having necessary skills. "Trade union leaders send list to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for driving license and the BRTA is forced to act according to the wish of trade union leaders," he added. Awami League lawmaker and trade union leader Shahjahan Khan said private transport owners have no clash with the BRTC. But they have to face much harassment while those, who get BRTC lease, enjoy much immunity, he alleged. Moderated by Advocate Rizwana Hasan, the roundtable was also addressed by BRTC Chairman Taimur Alam Khandaker, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, and former foreign secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed.
