Govt to take massive programme to control flood: PM

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday said the government is undertaking a massive programme to check river erosion and control flood permanently.This will need a huge money and the government is trying to involve the international community in the process, she told a spontaneous gathering of local people while distributing relief among flood-affected people at Aricha old ferry ghat. The prime minister flew in the badly affected Shibalaya upazila of Manikganj district defying inclement weather to see for herself the condition of the flood-hit people and distributed rice, saree and lungi among them. Braving heavy to moderate rainfall, thousands of people thronged the Aricha Ferry Ghat and Mahadevpur Degree College ground in the upazila where Khaleda made brief speeches and distributed relief materials. After distributing relief in Manikganj, Khaleda flew in Goalundo upazila in Rajbari district and distributed relief among the affected people at Daulatdia Model High School ground and addressed a gathering there. She also inaugurated the distribution of agriculture inputs as part of the post-flood rehabilitation programme by handing over paddy seeds among a number of farmers at Daulatdia. The prime minister assured the affected people that the government would continue the distribution of food among the poor until a new crop is harvested. She also said the affected people, who lost their houses will get cash money and corrugated iron (CI) sheets to rebuild their homes. "Please do not feel that you are alone. We are beside you. We will do everything whatever you need," she told the affected people. Khaleda urged the people to cooperate with the government and pray to the Almighty Allah seeking His help to face the disaster. "We have to face the calamity with patience and courage," she said.
