Bangladeshi pornography
Sayeedur Rahman, Birmingham, UK
I would like to bring the following matter to your attention since I cannot think of any better place to express my deepest concern. Very recently, the distribution of pornographic materials from Bangladesh has been extremely widespread. This is a great source of worry for us, since pornography is in no way part of our culture. Not only it has adversely affected the mental upbringing of our own children, now through world wide web this evil has tainted the image of Bangladesh. I received an email from the "moderator" of a website which is PORNBANGLADESH (www.pornbangladesh.com) inviting me to join it. The website is perhaps the worst representation of what truly our social values are. It contains extreme nudity, perverse pornographic stories and discussions, and to state the worst it also contains Bangladeshi made pornographic videos which can be downloaded. To my surprise, these videos and their actors are identified, and it is of our worst regret that these actors are very young university students. Where are we? How did this happen? This is not our culture, and we cannot make this a part of our culture. Our children must learn that pornography is not a part of Western culture either. Sexual illustrations, sexual freedom and sexual culture have never been the stimulation behind the success of the Western world, although some of us have the wrong perception of this truth. For societies with different values, practice of pornography and its business in a particular sector is sustainable. We are not and never prepared to accept this as a part of our social values and beliefs, let alone making it a business or institution to show to the world.
