3 injured shown arrested, suspect held

Police yesterday showed arrested three people injured in the twin blasts at two cinemas and nabbed another suspect from Bagbari in the city.Suleman and Masum Miah, wounded in the blast at Monica cinema, and Anwar, hurt in Rangmahal cinema blast, who are receiving treatment at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital under custody, have been shown arrested. Police also arrested Motaleb from Moina Miah's colony in Bagbari. The street urchin killed at Rangmahal has meanwhile been identified as Shahed, son of Anwar Hossain of Doutik village in Jaintapur. Shahed used to live with his mother, a house help, in Barutkhana in the city. Police have filed two separate cases for the twin blasts. Paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troops were deployed at the two cinemas. The army took the bomb found at Abokash cinema to the police firing range and is likely to defuse it today. A team of explosives experts from the capital will reach Sylhet for the purpose, sources said. Five cinemas remained closed, while only one cinema -- Dilshad -- shown film in the city yesterday. The law enforcers beefed up security in the areas of Hajrat Shahjalal Shrine. They used metal detectors to check each person at all three gates of the shrine mosque before the Juma prayers yesterday. Officials of different intelligence agencies started interrogating Suleman at the hospital. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sylhet Range, Ali Imam Chowdhury also quizzed him yesterday evening. Police suspect Suleman, 30, of Chhatiain village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj was the carrier of a bomb. He has been in Sylhet for 16 years and lives in the house of child specialist Dr MA Maleque. Police yesterday raided the house but returned empty-handed. Main opposition Awami League's (AL) district and city units brought out a procession in the city and held a rally chaired by City Mayor and President of city AL Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran in the court point area in the afternoon in protest at the blasts. The AL blamed repeated blasts here on fundamentalists.
