Taiwan to allow Bangladeshi workers by Sept

Taiwan plans to open its labor market to Bangladeshi workers by September at the earliest, the Council of Labour Affairs (CLA) said Friday.

The labor imports will be authorised after procedural matters with Bangladeshi hospitals in charge of physical check-ups for the workers have been completed in about one month, the CLA said in a statement.

The move follows a visit to Bangladesh by CLA Chairwoman Chen Chu.

Taipei opened a representative office in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on March 1 despite strong protests from China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.

Beijing claimed in May that Dhaka had shut down Taipei's office there but Taipei insisted that its de facto embassy was still operating.

As of the end of May, Taiwan employed 304,024 foreign workers mainly in construction, manufacturing, shipping and household help with the majority coming from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The island also allowed workers from Mongolia starting last May.
