Top criminal held, carbine recovered


Police arrested one top-notch criminal of the district Thursday and his two associates with modern firearms from the city in the early hours yesterday.

Acting on a tip off, a Rangunia Police Station team led by Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Md Jahangir Hossain Matubbar arrested top criminal Bakhtiar Hossain, 35,from Kazir Dewri under Kotwali thana at around 4:00pm. He is the leader of Bakhtiar Bahini, a Rangunia-based criminal group, and accused of 15 criminal charges.

Following Bakhtiar's confessional statement, police arrested his associate Musa, 25, and recovered a sub-machine carbine (SMC) from an abandoned house in Fakirabad in Bayezid.

In a separate drive, police held the other accomplice Md Tayeb Ali, 25, from a brick-field in Islampur in Rangunia at around 6:00am. They also recovered a foreign-made pistol with four bullets from a haystack of a house in Razanagar an hour later.

A short gunfight preceded Tayeb's arrest as he opened fire on police. He gave in as a bullet hit him in his right leg. He is receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital under custody.
