One dies after arrest by Rab

A Madarassah teacher died from his wounds at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday afternoon, two days after his arrest by the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the prime port city allegedly with ten AK-47 bullets.

Rab claimed Shahnewaj Titu, 25, son of Abdul Latif Master of Mandari Hajibari in Chandpur, suffered injuries while trying to evade arrest by jumping from the roof of a hotel, but family sources said he died from torture in the elite force's custody after arrest.

He was admitted to the CMCH on early Thursday after arrest on Wednesday along with Ziaul Alam Dipu and Monir Hossain Talukder.

A Rab press release claimed acting on a tip-off they nabbed them while they were selling ammunition at Maulana Hotel in Agrabad Choumuhini under the Double Mooring Police Station. They were caught with 22 rounds -- 10 bullets of AK-47 rifles, 10 pistol shots and 2 bullets of gun.

It alleged Shahnewaj was caught with 10 AK-47 rifle bullets after he suffered the injuries after jump from the hotel.

But Shahnewaj's family said he was a teacher of Kechuya Islamia Dakhil Madarassah in Chandpur and went to the port city to visit his younger sister.

They alleged Shahnewaj was admitted to the hospital early Thursday more than six hours after his arrest after unspeakable torture by Rab members.

They said Dipu was the husband of Shahnewaj's younger sister and Monir was a local leader of the ruling BNP and also a member of Gram Sarker.

They were sent to jail custody yesterday in the wake of the filing of an arms case against them on Thursday morning.
